The traditional psychological view of love sees it as a combination of companionate love and passionate love. Although some researchers disagree on the nature of love, there are several forms of deep affection that can be described as love.

According to Gary Chapman, there are five basic languages that people use to communicate love. These are quality time, physical touch, words of affirmation, acts of service and gifts. Each of these languages can be used to express different types of love.

Many cultures have different ways to define and understand love. For example, the Chinese character for love is “heart” with a middle ridge. This is a reference to the heart, which is considered the center of life.

Several Hindu writers have distinguished nine types of bhakti, or devotion. These include satya (good), bhakti (action), karma (duty), rajas (kingship), sarsanghra (beauty), and karma (compassion).

There is also a third kind of love, pragma, that is unconditional. Pragma is a form of selfless love that develops after a long period of time.
