Song is a piece of music, generally with words, though instrumental pieces may be considered songs too. It is often characterized by a repeating verse structure or a chorus. Songs can be as simple as a single melody and voice, or more complex in a variety of musical styles, including art songs, folk songs, pop/rock songs, and traditional or ethnic songs.
A song’s building blocks may include an introduction, verse, chorus, bridge and refrain. In some genres, a song may have additional sections as well, such as a pre-chorus or a transitional bridge. A song can be sung a cappella, or it can be performed with one instrument (such as an acoustic guitar), a band, or even a choir.
The Introduction is a song’s first section and serves to set the scene for the rest of the song. It establishes the song’s rhythm, tempo, beat, key and atmosphere. For example, a song with minor chords will portray a sad feel, while a fast tempo will convey energy. The Introduction also sets the mood for the song’s lyrical content.
The Verse is the song’s main story-telling section, and is usually followed by a chorus. It’s the part of a song that is most memorable, ideally being both lyrically and melodically catchy. In many songs, the chorus is repeated several times, adding a sense of musical and emotional intensity. The Chorus may also contain the song title/hook, which is often used to distinguish it from other sections of a song.
