There is a great deal of debate about the nature of love. Some think it is a mere emotion, while others think it involves some sort of teleological object. Whatever the case, theories about love are complicated and not easily classified. In addition, they tend to avoid explicitly reductionist language, and many of them lack a concrete conceptual object.

Love can be defined as “a feeling of deep affection toward another person or thing” or “strong liking for something.” But love goes beyond feelings of intense affection. It can refer to feelings of warmth, compassion, or self-sacrifice. It is the most powerful emotion, and it is different than the opposite – hate.

Philosophers of love often emphasize the personal dimension of love. Frankfurt (1999) gives a general account of love, while Jaworska and Wonderly (2017) offer a more general account. Velleman and Badhwar also focus on the idea of love in the context of relationships. In their book, they use personal examples to illustrate this idea.
