Hokkaido: Furano

Day 3

Furano is known for their beautiful lavender farms and the patchwork route which is best viewed in summer. Although we went during autumn, we added this in as we were at Asahikawa, Furano can be a good pit stop for a day before we head to the west of Hokkaido. Unfortunately, the day for great scenery is dampen by the non-stop rain. But thankfully we drove, so most of the time we were in the car, away from the wind and rain. But alot of our destinations could not be enjoyed fully due to the wet weather.

Biei Blue Pond 美瑛の青い池

This man-made pond, like the name suggested, is known for its deep blue water that resulted from the aluminium and other minerals dissolved in the water. The pond is intriguing as the colour of the pond differs ever so slightly in different weather, different seasons. It is a great spot to take photos, but otherwise there is not much to be done here.

The place is easy to get to if you drive. There is a huge open carpark right next to the pond. We took photos and quickly go back to the car to escape from the rain. Despite the rain, this place is still brimming with people.

Tomita Farm

I was half worried that this place would be closed, as the lavender season is over. But there are still flowers to be seen, just not on a large scale. It would still have been a great place to admire the flowers while having their lavender ice-cream and sipping on lavender tea. Except that it was raining and it looks gloomy instead. Sigh.

Nonetheless, the kids still had fun, eating ice-cream in the cold weather, jumping on muddy puddles and looking at the farmers working on the new patch of lavender.

We also visited Furano Marche and Furano Ningle Terrace. Furano marche is a fresh food market with some souvenirs and eateries. But nothing fantastic if you are not going to buy the fresh produces. Furano Ningle Terrace looks just as awesome in the photos with the fairy lights and the little cottages. But unfortunately as it was raining heavily and the cottages are too small for 8 people to squeeze in, we ended up walking in circles in the rain and finally decided to call it a day.

I guess this is an excuse for me to visit Furano during summer next time!

Kumagera Wagyu Sashimi

After a wet day of little accomplishments, we decided we need a good meal to cheer ourselves up. We head straight to Kumagera for its famous Wagyu Sashimi. We were worried that it will be full, given that it is a highly rated restaurant and appears in almost everywhere when I search for what to eat in Furano. Thankfully, not only that we got ample of parking space available, we also got a nice cosy corner for our big group.

Their must try includes local wagyu sashimi and their hotpot. My friends were quite skeptical about wagyu sashimi but it turns out better than we thought. We were told to add wasabi and drizzle some soy sauce on it before we eat with rice. It is very fresh and tender with the fatty parts. It doesn’t has a strong taste compared to when it’s cooked but definitely worth trying!

But our favourite of the night has got to be their wagyu beef steak. Soft, tender and full of flavour that simply melts in our mouth! Oh my gosh, I am already missing it! We also tried their bear meat, which is tender and tasted a lot like pork.

What better way to warm up our bodies on a cold, wet day with hotpot! We ordered seafood nabe pot and the Wagyu Sukiyaki Hotpot for our kids and they turned out really good too. The wagyu beef shabu shabu is excellent and the seafood nabe pot is full of goodies. I will highly recommend this place, definitely a must-visit in Furano.
